A scenic Scottish beach at the centre of a dispute between naturists and locals has been named the “most relaxing” in the country.
In a new survey conducted by SpaSeekers.com, Findhorn Beach was revealed to be among the most tranquil bays in the world. The beach was mentioned as ‘relaxing’ in 5.8 per cent of online travel reviews.
However, as reported by the Scottish Daily Express, the bay was the site of a controversy surrounding the Great British Skinny Dip event. The nudist swim reportedly disrupted the peaceful spot, as organisers and locals became embroiled in a quarrel.
Event organiser Alan Ellison, 64, revealed that irate locals repeatedly tore down posters advertising the event, with one individual even contacting the police to demand its prohibition on legal grounds. They were informed that skinny dipping is not illegal.
Despite the opposition, the event proceeded with 31 brave participants stripping off for a dip in the chilly Moray Firth. The event was part of a national campaign promoting the benefits of naturism and also raised funds for conservation efforts on the Findhorn Dunes.
In July 2023, The Times crowned Findhorn Beach as Scotland’s “best” beach. Renowned for its extensive, unspoilt stretches of sand and breathtaking views across to the Black Isle, it is an ideal quiet spot for long walks and wildlife spotting
Meanwhile, Meadfoot Beach in Torquay was crowned the UK’s most relaxing beach by SpaSeekers.com. A significant 8.2 per cent of online travel reviews herald the spot for its tranquillity.
Elsewhere in Scotland, Troon beach was named as ‘relaxing’ in 5 per cent of online reviews. West Sands in St Andrews and Stonehaven beach followed behind, both with 4.3 per cent.
Globally, the crown for the most relaxing beach went to Little French Key, a private island off Honduras. Just under 17 per cent of its 4,250 reviews lauded it as ‘relaxing’.
Looking to Europe, Iceland’s Nautholsvik Geothermal Beach stole the spotlight with 15.1 per cent of reviews praising its relaxed vibes. At the beach, steam baths and geothermal-heated waters provide a one-of-a-kind chill-out experience.
Jason Goldberg, Director at SpaSeekers.com, commented: “If you’re considering visiting one of these relaxing beaches, you can make your experience even more calming by visiting some of the more popular coastal spots at quieter times and ensuring that you organise your trip in advance to avoid any last-minute stress.”
