Brits heading to Spain may face their “biggest warning yet” as a certain holiday hotspot could be headed for a shake-up.

From 2025, British tourists can expect big changes in European Union destinations, and popular hotspots like Majorca are already gearing up for a major overhaul. These include measures for overcrowding and saturated tourism to strike a between holidaymakers and locals, as stated in local publications.

President Marga Prohens has said “firm and brave decisions” are needed to tackle overcrowding on the island and the wider Balearics She stressed that immediate action will be taken to manage the influx of holidaymakers, while long-term strategies are being developed.

The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports that Prohens went on to say that these measures will be “brave” and reached through consensus.

She said: “The tourist is always welcome and well treated on our islands. Tourism has been and will continue to be the main source of wealth generation and income to sustain our well-being for many years.”

Prohens added that the government wants to encourage innovation and attract investment by simplifying administrative processes and setting up a “project accelerator unit.”

She highlighted the pivotal role of tourism in the Balearic economy and called on residents to take pride in their primary sector, reports Coventry Live.

The president made it clear: “Tourism has been and will continue to be the main source of wealth generation and income to sustain our well-being for many years.”

Reviewing the prospects for 2024, she pointed out a six percent surge in the number of visitors coupled with a 13 percent increase in the spending of tourists.

A visitor remarked: “I’m guessing that Covid would have had a very sobering effect on people’s personal finances if free money hadn’t been handed out to all. Maybe, the benefits of tourists and tourism would have been more obvious.”
