Brits planning a getaway to one of Spain’s most beloved holiday hotspots have been told to “be careful”.

Last year alone, 5.6million people visited Tenerife – the crown jewel of the Canary Islands – making it the archipelago’s top holiday destination. The island’s size means it caters to all sorts of holidaymakers – from those seeking serene beachside retreats to party-goers looking for vibrant nightlife.

However, where tourists flock, crime often follows, and now a Brit residing on the island has sounded the alarm about a particular hotspot where travellers should stay alert.

A TikTok user going by @seb_tenerife, who now lives in Tenerife, highlighted a ruse that is reportedly also prevalent in Benidorm. The scam involves someone asking to borrow your phone under various pretences, such as needing directions or having lost their pals, only to make off with it once you’ve unlocked it. He mentioned that “pickpockets” are another concern in Tenerife.

“I would just again be very careful,” Seb advised. “Benidorm is a lot like Tenerife – both great holiday destinations, great weather, booze is flying, everyone’s here for a good time, very similar sorts of destinations […] But obviously, like anywhere where holiday places are […] You’ve just got to be wary.”

Seb pinpointed a specific trouble spot on the island – the beachfront resort of Playa de las Americas, including the notorious Veronica’s strip. He warned: “Las Americas does seem to be the spot where it’s all happening, especially down Veronica’s […] So aye, just be careful, watch your belongings, and you’ll be absolutely sound.”

In the comments section, Seb elaborated that these incidents tend to happen “due to alcohol”, with people too drunk to be aware of their surroundings. His cautionary video has quickly garnered more than 15,000 views on TikTok.
