Queen Camilla’s son Tom Parker-Bowles has opened up about his feelings towards not receiving a royal title.
The 49-year-old food writer is the eldest child of the Queen from her first marriage to retired Army officer Andrew Parker-Bowles. Tom was introduced to Royal life when his mother married Prince Charles in 2005.
Despite his mother becoming Queen and his step-siblings, Prince William and Prince Harry, being born into the Royal Family, Tom and his sister Laura were not granted titles.
Interviewing Tom on the News Agents podcast in 2023, journalist Emily Maitlis asked: “You call King Charles your stepdad and pause before saying the Queen, what do you become?”
To which Tom replied: “I become nothing. There would be a revolution if they started handing them out to people like me. Why would I expect a title?” Podcast host Emily went on to ask Tom if he found it “weird” to think about his mum being the Queen.
He responded: “Not really, because she is still our mother. I say our not speaking as the royal we, but speaking for my sister and me.
“She is our mother and change happens but I don’t care what anyone says, this wasn’t any sort of end game, she married the person she loved and this is what happened.
“You’re not going to find us with some great estate, the duke of whatever, no. That would be appalling.”
Tom recently shared that the King’s cancer treatment is “going well”, half a year after his diagnosis was made public. He also commended his mum, describing her as “tough”, as she gets ready to embark on a reduced tour of Australia alongside her husband.
Throughout his writing career, Tom has penned several cookbooks, with his latest work, Cooking and the Crown: Royal recipes from Queen Victoria to King Charles III, hitting the shelves this week. He will be joining Saturday Kitchen today, hosted by Matt Tebbutt, along with fellow guests Dina Macki and Helen McGinn.
Saturday Kitchen broadcasts on BBC One starting at 10am.
