Pesto, the uniquely adorable penguin, has been waddling into the hearts of people around the world – and has quickly become a social media star.
Standing out from the crowd with his fluffy chocolate brown coat and significantly taller stature, the chubby nine-month-old penguin, affectionately known as a “big baby” and a “line-backer” among his black and white kin, captivates onlookers. Tipping the scales at nearly 50 pounds, Pesto outweighs both his parents combined.
Sea Life Melbourne shared with excitement: “Since hatching earlier this year, Pesto has quickly captured hearts globally, not just for his adorable antics, but for his impressive size. He’s officially the largest chick Sea Life Melbourne has ever seen, making him a huge hit with guests and fans around the world.”
Education supervisor Jacinta Early commented warmly on Pesto’s well-being: “He’s just a big baby. He’s eating quite a bit, he’s not considered to be an unhealthy weight.” Born in January, Pesto’s has a big appetite, as he consumes at least 25 fish daily.
According to Sea Life Melbourne, Pesto’s charm has garnered roughly two billion views worldwide, melting hearts through sweet clips online. Fans frequently gush over his appearance, exclaiming “Pesto is the besto” and traveling great distances just for a glimpse of the hefty chick who’s been dubbed “so chonky and cute”.
Even the singer Katy Perry couldn’t resist becoming part of the Pesto fan club. Earlier this week, Perry paid a visit to the penguin following a viral video that gathered four million views, showing aquarium staff boogying with Pesto to one of her hits. Perry promised hat she “will come by and get a blessing” before her show at the Australian Football League’s grand finale.
The pop sensation dead-panned: “Visited Pesto last night. he told me who will win in the @afl grand final tomorrow but my lips are sealed.” Perry was snapped entering the penguin’s area and engaging in some bubble-blowing antics with Pesto.
Growing up is on the cards for Pesto, meaning he is expected to slim down. The adorably fluffy brown feathers that have charmed fans will eventually be replaced by his adult black and white plumage.
For those eager to meet Pesto, tickets to the Sea Life Aquarium are available. Adults can enter for around £25.63, while children’s entry comes at about £18.64.
