The Madrid derby between Atletico and Real was temporarily suspended with the players forced off the pitch.
Diego Simeone and players like Koke could be seen talking to the home fans due to crowd trouble. ITV announced that the match was delayed due to the crowd throwing objects onto the pitch with the clock stopped on 69 minutes and the stars from both sides ordered off the turf at the Metropolitano in scenes described by ITV commentator Terry Gibson as ‘idiotic’
He said: “It is just idiotic. You’ve got over 20 minutes to go. Everybody wants to see football.” The action resumed following a delay with Real leading through an Eder Militao goal with 20 minutes left on the clock. However, Ángel Correa levelled in the sixth minute of added time to grab a share of the derby spoils in a night to forget off the pitch for the hosts. Spanish football expert Guillem Balague slammed the behaviour on show and reckons Atletico haven’t been strong enough on their own fans for a number of years.
He told ITV: “There is something that is not right. That group of fans is very well known for [that] behaviour. That group of fans, the ultras of Atletico Madrid, go to the youth Champions League for instance because there is not so much police and they come out with outrageous behaviour. I don’t think Atletico Madrid through the last few years have been strong enough on their own ultras and it gets to a point where things get out of hand.”
