Last day of CoalTown Fall Festival able to continue thanks to improved weather

WELCH, W. Va. -Despite storm damage to many powerlines throughout McDowell County, downtown Welch had no loss of power, helping the CoalTown Fall Festival in Welch continue on its last day.

Although the festival, which was supposed to start on Wednesday, lost events on three of its four-day runtime due to the storm, the lack of rain on the final day brought the return of carnival rides and craft and food vendors.

Harold McBride, the mayor of Welch, says this event gives local vendors the chance to showcase their wares in a way they normally wouldn’t get to and gives the people stopping by the chance to shop and try new foods. He adds, the power outage across the area may have actually brought people to their fall festival, giving those looking for something to eat a variety of options.

While the weather prevented the festival from going exactly as planned, Mayor McBride says they accomplished their goal of showing people a good time.

“Well, you know, it kind of dampened for a couple days, but, hey, we get today in and have fun, then it’s okay. We’ll have fun and chalk it up for a good day,” says Mayor McBride.

The festivities continued there until 10:00 pm when the event concluded with a fireworks show.
