Jamie Redknapp reckons Manchester United have hit ‘rock bottom’ under Erik ten Hag and doesn’t see how the Dutchman can turn things around at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils fell to their third Premier League defeat of the season after being hammered 3-0 at home to Ange Postecoglou‘s Tottenham – with skipper Bruno Fernandes being shown a straight red card in the first half. The loss has left United sitting in a lowly 12th position in the table after six matches, seven points off the Champions League spots.
Former Ajax boss ten Hag narrowly avoided the sack at the end of last season by lifting the FA Cup, but Sky Sports pundit Redknapp reckons the 54-year-old can have no excuses for another woefully under-par display. He said: “You asked the question that maybe Ange is under pressure, but if you are a manager under pressure this is the place you want to come because you get all your confidence back. You look at Tottenham today and it was so easy for them.
“They looked so comfortable and calm and were under no duress. That’s £616million he (ten Hag) has spent and it feels to me that United are going backwards. He can’t complain anymore as he has got his back four in place and all the players at his disposal. There are no excuses.
“They are rock bottom right now and I don’t see where he can go from here. They are as bad as I have seen a United side. I think Gary (Neville) called it disgusting and it is embarrassing for a club of this stature to produce performances like that.”
Despite the pressure ramping up on his future, Dutchman ten Hag refused to admit that he might need results against Porto in the Europa League next Thursday and at Aston Villa in the Premier League to potentially save his job. “I don’t want to talk about progress after such a defeat”, he stated. “We have to deal with this and show resilience definitely, but we don’t talk about progress at this time. I want to deal with this defeat first.
“I am just focused on Porto. We will close this game down and deal with it and then we move on.”
