Manchester United turned in a dismal display at Old Trafford as Tottenham cruised to a 3-0 victory away from home.
On a thoroughly miserable afternoon for Erik ten Hag and his side, United were second best in every department, lacking invention, discipline and heart as Spurs swept them to one side.
Brennan Johnson gave Tottenham the lead inside two minutes after wonderful work from Micky van de Ven.
United limped through a woeful first-half performance where Tottenham should have added to their lead.
A woeful first 45 also saw Bruno Fernandes shown a straight red card for his challenge on James Maddison. The United skipper is now set to miss games against Aston Villa, Brentford and West Ham.
The home side were booed off by a furious Old Trafford crowd at half-time and things only got worse.
United fell apart again early in the second period with Dejan Kulusevski adding to Tottenham’s lead. Dominic Solanke also got on the scoresheet with United failing to lay a glove on their top four rivals.

GOAL! Man Utd 0-3 Tottenham (Solanke, 77)
GOAL! Man Utd 0-2 Tottenham (Kulusevski, 47 mins)
RED CARD FOR BRUNO FERNANDES
GOAL! Man Utd 0-1 Tottenham (Johnson, 2 mins)
FULL-TIME: Man Utd 0-3 Tottenham
Brilliant from Tottenham. Wretched from United.
90 mins
Six minutes of injury time added on.
This has been a truly miserable afternoon for United and Erik ten Hag. That first-half performance was as bad as it’s been for the club during a period when inept performances and woeful results have been as regular as clockwork.
87 mins
Hojlund flings himself at Eriksen’s whipped cross but it’s out of the Dane’s reach.
The week doesn’t get any easier for United, by the way. Trips to Porto and Aston Villa loom large with today’s wretched performance the worst possible preparation for those tests.
83 mins
Just in case the afternoon wasn’t miserable enough for United, Mason Mount, brought on after Bruno Fernandes’ red card, has gone off with a nasty cut on his head. Victor Lindelof is onto replace him.
82 mins
That third goal prompted a mass exodus around Old Trafford. You can’t blame them.
78 mins
Easy peasy for Spurs. A corner comes in and Sarr gets the flick on where Solanke is on hand to prod home.
GOAL! Man Utd 0-3 Tottenham (Solanke, 77)
Solanke gets in on the act!
71 mins
Moments after Werner misses another chance, Garnacho marches up the pitch, cutting inside to get his shot off. He settles for a corner.
There’s a double Dane change with Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund on for Ugarte and Rashford.
68 mins
Chance for Casemiro! Martinez lifts an inviting ball over the top that Casemiro latches onto. It’s from a very tight angle but the Brazilian gets good contact on the ball with his effort veering just wide.
67 mins
It’s hard to be wasteful against United today but Werner is managing it. This time it’s a strange cross that’s whipped straight into Onana’s arms with his teammates flooding the box.
62 mins
A bit more pressure from United here and Old Trafford has come alive again. Garnacho whips a corner into the box but Casemiro’s glancing header is wide of the far post.
58 mins
Old Trafford howls for a penalty after the ball comes off Romero’s arm in the box. There’s a VAR review but nothing is given.
55 mins
Another minute, another Spurs chance. Kulusevski pushes through the middle and threads a lovely ball through for Werner. It’s a carbon copy of the first-half effort and the end result is the same, a poor effort from the German and decent stop from Onana.
54 mins
That’s another yellow card for United. Lisandro Martinez this time crashes through Maddison and three of the home side’s back four are on a booking. This could get even messier.
52 mins
Spurs casually cut through again with Porro the latest to have a crack. He can’t quite dig the shot out however and it’s an easy save for Onana.
49 mins
Spurs strike after three minutes again! United are caught far too high up the pitch and Spurs cut through them again. Johnson this time is the creator, finding Kulusevski who finishes cleverly to double the lead.
GOAL! Man Utd 0-2 Tottenham (Kulusevski, 47 mins)
Spurs double their lead!
Back underway
The second-half is underway and there’s another change for United with Zirkzee making way for Mason Mount. No centre forward on the pitch for the hosts.
Half-time: Man Utd 0-1 Tottenham
Boos all around Old Trafford. Utterly grim from United.
48 mins
After four minutes on the pitch, Mount becomes the third United player to pick up a yellow card.
