(Gray News) – Salt Life’s new owners are closing all of the company’s retail locations, about half of which are in Florida.

The iconic coastal brand was bought at auction by Iconix International Inc. and Hilco Merchant Resources Inc. this month for a joint bid of $38.74 million after the owner, Duluth, Georgia-based Delta Apparel, Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June, the Jacksonville Daily Record reported.

The company also stopped manufacturing in Honduras in June, blaming a lack of enough funds to continue its operations and “significant reductions in demand,” according to an SEC filing at the time.

Delta Apparel Inc. was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange in July.

The apparel firm’s year-to-year sales were down 40% as of May, Promotional Products Association Southwest said.

The Salt Life brand was started in 2003 “by four avid watermen from Jacksonville Beach, Florida,” and grew through widespread distribution. One of those co-founders, Troy Hutto, was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2023 for the killing of an 18-year-old woman, the Florida-Times Union reported.

Salt Life was bought by Delta Apparel in 2013 for $37 million.

The brand’s merchandise includes lifestyle apparel, performance garments, decals, board shorts and swimwear, optics and water gear and can be purchased at surf shops, department stores, sporting good retailers and online.

The Salt Life Food Shack locations are owned by a separate firm and are not impacted by the liquidation, the Jacksonville Daily Record reported.

Oct. 20 is the last day to use Salt Life’s gift cards, the company said.
