Kilmarnock wonderkid David Watson insists just one result will turn their season around as they aim to pick up their first win of the league campaign.

The Rugby Park side squandered a two goal lead at home to Dundee United last weekend, with Watson coming off the bench to score twice, as they were forced to settle for a third successive draw.

Killie were 3-1 up heading into the final 11 minutes on Saturday before Craig Sibbald pulled one back and Ross Graham rescued a point for the visitors with a penalty in the ninth minute of injury-time.

Despite that, Watson is confident things will come good for the side once they finally get those first three points in the bag.

He said: “I think it will be a case of kicking on once we get that first league win. Our performances haven’t been bad, especially because we have been down to 10 men so often. Against United, we were really good in the second half for half an hour. I am sure you will see us kick on once we get that win.”

He added: “I don’t think there is any lack of belief in the team. I think we are all together. There’s a really good unity in the group and once we get that win we will be able to kick on.”

The 19-year-old has shown himself capable of producing magical moments with the first of his brace being a wonderful overhead kick just two minutes after coming off the bench.

It was his first league goal in six months – since he strolled 60 yards with the ball jinking through the St Mirren defence to net in their 5-2 triumph over the Buddies in March.

He commented: “They were two different goals. I wouldn’t like to compare it with the goal I scored against St Mirren last season. It was just off the cuff. I was just delighted to see it go in. It’s just one of those things that came off.

“I have never scored a goal like that before, but I have never even attempted it to be fair, so I was buzzing with it.”

He added: “We do practise late runs into the box as a midfielder because they are hard to pick up.

“I’ve timed it perfectly for my second goal and I just nicked in and put it the other way to where the goalie was diving. That is the first time I have scored two goals in a game so I am delighted about that at least.”

Watson saw himself dropped to the bench for the first time for a league game this term but he says the fact he scored twice as a substitute proves that Derek McInnes made the right call, saying: “I think the manager got it spot on with his selection.

“Maybe when I came on at half-time I elevated the game a bit and brought us more energy. I wasn’t disappointed not be have started and the manager gave me his reasons for that.”
