The number of people assessed as being homeless in Dumfries and Galloway has fallen.

New figures show the council handled 1,157 homelessness applications in 2023/24 – 98 fewer than the year before.

And 841 of those applications led to someone being deemed homeless or threatened with homelessness – 154 down on the 2023/24 figure.

There were 273 children associated with the applications, nearly a third down on the previous year.

Earlier this year, the council declared a housing emergency, with more than 1,000 households living in conditions “below tolerable standard”, with more than 500 open homeless applications on the council’s books.

Across Scotland, the number of applications rose from 39,308 last year to 40,685 in 2023/24.

There were 33,619 successful applications, an increase of more than 1,000 on the previous 12 months.
