Monday night’s episode of Married At First Sight UK was rife with drama as contestant Caspar Todd declared he was ‘done’ amidst the turmoil.
The show saw relationship expert Mel Schilling challenge Caspar over his insensitive remarks about his wife Emma Barnes’ appearance during their honeymoon.
Emma was left reeling when Caspar confessed to not feeling attracted to her, saying: “I’ve been struggling, I don’t know if you’ve felt it. But I haven’t felt that spark I was hoping to feel,” leaving Emma visibly taken aback.
Caspar’s comments escalated when he compared Emma to his sister and then insulted her further by admitting he usually doesn’t go for “I’ve rarely gone for the curvier person,” A shocked Emma questioned, “But you don’t think I’m sexy?” to which Caspar bluntly responded, “No.”
She pressed him, asking if he ever found her attractive, and Caspar’s stark admission was, “Not currently no, let’s be honest,” reports the Mirror.
Emma expressed her hurt, stating, “I’m a size 14. I’m not a f***ing monster.”
In the latest instalment, Mel, aged 52, confronted the couple about the incident, prompting Caspar to acknowledge: “I didn’t set out in this experiment to hurt my wife and on the honeymoon I did that.”
Mel questioned Caspar’s choice of criticism towards Emma, asking him pointedly: “Of all the things you could have said to her, why do you think you chose her body to focus on?” Taking a moment, Caspar worsened the situation by responding: “It was my honest truth, I didn’t want to lie. What I like generally in women is someone who is slightly slimmer. That, I said the truth.”
When Mel probed further about how he views his own physique, Caspar admitted that when he looks in the mirror, “I see all the bad bits.”
This led Mel to highlight a potential double standard, questioning him: “Is it interesting to you then that you chose that particular issue, a person’s body image, to attack in Emma? Do you see that it’s a double standard?”
Yet, Caspar’s frustration showed as he vented off-camera: “F**k’s sake, I thought that the comments I made on the honeymoon had been put to bed and we’re moving on. If they keep coming up, I’m done!”
At the session, after acknowledging his double standards, Mel pushed for a fresh start for the couple and declared: “I really want to start with a clean slate with the two of you” prompting them to exchange compliments.
