Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson was delighted to host the Foundation for Science and Technology at Holyrood.

The Foundation promotes discussion and dialogue between government and parliaments in the UK with industry and the research community on areas where science and technology meet policy and regulation.

The group were keen to visit the Scottish Parliament and understand how science and technology interacts Scottish policy. They were joined by Richard Lochhead MSP, Minister for Business, whose remit covers science.

Ms Adamson, who comes from an IT background, is keen to promoted careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to young people in Motherwell and Wishaw.

She said: “We are in the fourth industrial revolution. AI, cyber, internet of things – these are no longer far-flung concepts of a high-tech digital future.

“These are the major growth industries in Scotland and globally. And we need to keep pace with rapid tech developments which will be critical to addressing the biggest issues we face as a species from climate breakdown to antibiotic resistance.

“There is so much untapped potential in my own Motherwell and Wishaw constituency and across Scotland. We need young leaders to build the next generation of STEM innovators.

“I have always been passionate about women in STEM careers. It was a pleasure having the Foundation for Science and Technology in the Parliament, not least because the group had women who are on the cutting edge of scientific research and development.

“We discussed climate science, AI, quantum technology, all the way to videogames and the array of incredible practical applications for scientific development that you might not have considered.

“In this community we have some great local organisations. New College Lanarkshire’s Motherwell campus runs some fantastic courses and boasts the Smart Hub for robotics. Wishaw YMCA runs a brilliant Esports programme for those with an interest in gaming.

“I hope any young person reading this will think about the amazing opportunities there are in science and tech.”
