What somebody else decides to name their child should typically be none of your concern.
However, one woman was so taken aback by her colleague’s choice of baby name that she felt compelled to share her shock online. The woman described her co-worker as a “really nice person” and sent a congratulatory card for the birth of her baby girl but found herself puzzled over the unique spelling choice, which even bamboozled her autocorrect feature.
She took to Reddit, detailing her bewilderment in a post: “My coworker’s tragedeigh birth announcement – Gabreighelle Courtlin”. She also shared the birth announcement which featured the unconventional spelling.
In her post, she wrote: “She’s a really nice coworker so I wanted to send her a little gift card as a congratulations. But I just can’t get over this name and my AutoCorrect goes wild. It keeps trying to change the name to something else.”
Intrigued by the puzzling name, fellow Reddit users chimed in within the comments section. Some were perplexed by the parents’ spelling decision when “Gabrielle Courtney was RIGHT THERE!!!!!!”.
The woman who started the thread responded, giving further context: “I remember she told me she was considering both Gabrielle and Courtney as names. Not sure how this spelling came about. I also don’t want to be rude/mean and ask. She really is a wonderful coworker and very happy for her.”
One person described the spelling as “atrocious”, while another commented: “Yeah, give your child an already lengthy name that will be a b*****d to spell and write in early school, then add several totally unnecessary letters. Great job.”
A Redditor joked: “I have Covid and it looks how my cough sounds”, with another adding: “Gobbledigookleigh”. A user named Gabrielle wrote: “I’m a Gabrielle and never once thought my name could be gentrified, yet here we are”.
