We’ve all been there, on a first date that doesn’t quite go to plan, and instead of being honest or letting you down gently, the person just straight-up blocks you on WhatsApp. But how can you be certain you’ve actually been blocked?
Tech whiz @comfietech took to TikTok to explain the signs that you’ve been added to someone’s block list.
“WhatsApp users, here’s how to check if someone has blocked you on WhatsApp”, she began. “Firstly, when you send them a message it won’t be delivered”, she explained, meaning the message will only show ‘one tick’ rather than ‘double ticking’.
Next, “you won’t be able to see their profile picture again”, which can be puzzling if they never had a photo up in the first place. However, if you used to see a cheerful selfie as their profile pic, and now you’re seeing a grey outline of a head and shoulders, it’s bad news.
Also, “if you try to call them on WhatsApp the call won’t go through”, they’ve likely blocked you. She also revealed that everyone has a status as part of their profile, with the default one being “Hey there! I am using WhatsApp” – but this can be personalised.
Yet, “if the person’s blocked you, you won’t be able to see their own [status]”. So, if you check someone’s profile and it’s “blank”, it means you’ve likely been blocked. Or, your signal is just rubbish.
In the comments, a user clarified that a single tick doesn’t always spell being blocked, explaining: “One check if they haven’t received and read it. Not blocked. My son doesn’t have signal all the time. But once he’s online it becomes two checks”.
Yet, a single tick can indeed mean you’ve been given the cold shoulder – you’d need to test other tricks to be sure.
Another user lamented: “Yep, my crush blocked me”, while another was irked: “So many of my friends and even my old teacher.”
