The highly anticipated sequel, The Platform 2, is set to hit Netflix later this week, leaving fans of the original film on edge with excitement.

Netflix has released a synopsis for the upcoming movie, reading: “As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?”

This latest release follows the success of its predecessor, The Platform, which was launched in cinemas across Spain in 2019 and globally on Netflix.

The follow-up film boasts a star-studded cast including Milena Smit from The Snow Girl, Money Heist’s Hovik Keuchkerian, Game of Thrones actress Natalia Tena and Oscar Jaenada from Luis Miguel: The Series.

Before the new release drops on October 4, let’s take a look back at how The Platform ended. But, be warned, MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD.

What happens at the end of Netflix’s The Platform?

The end of Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s The Platform packs a huge punch, with a major twist as well as plenty of unanswered questions to leave it open to a sequel, reports the Mirror.

The film is set entirely within the confines of a dystopian prison, which consists of an endless stack of two-person cells.

The mission of Goreng (Ivan Massague) and Baharat (Emilio Buale) to ride the platform to its lowest depths and distribute equal food rations incites violent retaliation, nearly killing both men.

At one point, another inmate suggests that their mission might be more successful if they send back a single food item – in this case, panna cotta – to the top level as a symbol of their cause.

However, the further they descend, the less hopeful their cause appears, until they discover a more promising message: Miharu’s (Alexandra Masangkay) long-lost daughter, who has been hiding on the bottom floor all along.

After Baharat succumbs to a fatal wound, Goreng takes her down below the 333rd level, from where the platform is sent back up. He initially planned to ride back up with the girl, until a vision of the slain Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor) informs Goreng that his “journey is over.”

He walks away from the platform into the sinister unknown with Trimagasi as the sleeping child ascends to the top floor before the credits roll.

What does the end of The Platform mean?

The film’s ending and what it represents metaphorically has been a point of discussion amongst horror film buffs, as they try to decipher what should be trusted as real or imaginary.

The Platform’s bittersweet ending, despite its bleak tone, leaves us with plenty of questions.

According to CinemaBlend, Goreng’s “mission to bring Miharu’s child to the top could successfully put an end to The Pit’s dehumanizing experiment. However, it also sealed his fate, which is made apparent to me by his final stroll alongside his dead former cellmate”.

While we never see the outcome of his sacrifice, it leaves viewers with a sense of hope after the many brutal scenes they have witnessed throughout.

The publication also argues that The Pit, which is the prison in which The Platform is set, could represent modern-day capitalism.

Also compared to Dante’s Inferno, it seems The Platform may be a socio-economic allegory, teaching viewers that people can easily fail or prosper at random depending on where they fall on the economic ladder.

The most important question remains: did Goreng’s sacrifice ultimately amount to anything?

Fans hope to find out more in the sequel, The Platform 2, which is coming to Netflix on October 4.
