Arne Slot has played down the severity of Diogo Jota’s injury but confirms Federico Chiesa will miss Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Bologna on Wednesday.

Liverpool host Bologna at Anfield in the second game of their Champions League campaign on Wednesday evening and are looking for their second victory in the competition after their 3-1 win away to AC Milan last month.

Ahead of the game against Bologna, both Jota and Chiesa did not take part in Tuesday’s training session.

But while Slot expects the Portugal international to return from a knock he suffered in the 2-1 win against Wolves on Saturday, the Liverpool manager will be without Chiesa, who suffered an injury during training on Monday.

‘Diogo missed out on two sessions after the game against Wolves, he took a knock,’ Slot said on Tuesday at his pre-match press conference.

‘I’m expecting him to be with us tomorrow, that he’s available to play.

‘Federico trained with us yesterday, came in today with some problems and I’m not expecting him to be in the team tomorrow, which is a pity for us but of course for him even more, he was looking forward to a Champions League night at Anfield, and especially because we are facing an Italian team.

‘It’s a pity for him but he will be there many more nights to come.’

When asked how long he expects Chiesa to be sidelined, Slot replied: ‘Yeah, that’s always difficult because it happened yesterday.

‘But I’m not expecting him to be out for a very long period of time but this game is not possible for him.

‘We have to wait and see if he can manage to be in the team on Saturday [against ] afterwards it’s the international break.’
