Mairi McAllan MSP has paid tribute to female sporting participants across her constituency who “inspire and support others across Clydesdale to get active”.
She was speaking to mark the launch of Scottish women and girls in sport week, which aims to eradicate gender inequality in sport and encourage more discussion around women’s health.
This year’s theme is celebrating leadership, and Ms McAllan said: “I pay tribute to the women and girls across Clydesdale who are leading the way by encouraging more women and girls to get active.
“Every woman and girl in Clydesdale can be a leader, and I encourage them to bring others along with them in getting active and share their achievements on social media using #SheCanSheWill.
“We know how beneficial physical activity is, but to encourage greater participation girls must be able to look to role-models who inspire them to participate and enjoy the wide-ranging benefits of sports.”
The cabinet secretary also highlighted the announcement of £1.45 million in Holyrood funding for Sport Scotland’s active campus network, saying it has “helped thousands of women in college take up sports”; and added that the Scottish Government plans to “double investment in sport and active living to £100m by the end of this parliament”.
