Councillors want a “forensic review” to discover why it took so long to count votes in this year’s General Election.

Results for the Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale and Dumfries and Galloway seats were among the last in the whole of the UK to be announced.

Now, Labour Councillors Linda Dorward and Carolyne Wilson want to find out what happened.

The pair have lodged a motion, which will be discussed at Thursday’s full council meeting.

It states: “The Labour group recognise that planning for a general election, especially one called at short notice involves a great deal of work and requires the capacity for stringent oversight and the ability to deal swiftly with contingencies, as they arise.

“However, we feel that the specific issues that arose during the count itself, over July 4 and 5, merit a forensic review of the entire election preparation process and of contingency planning put in place.

“This should allow for a lessons learned report to be shared with all those involved to ensure we are better prepared in future and, as far as is reasonably practicable, that delays of this magnitude, in the counting process, do not occur again.

“We hereby move that a lessons learned report, focussed on the counting process over July 4 and 5, is presented at full council scheduled for December 12.”

The Dumfriesshire result wasn’t declared until after 9am on July 5, with the Dumfries and Galloway declaration after 10am.

The 2019 General Election saw the results announced by 5am.

A report attached to the motion from council chief executive and returning officer Dawn Roberts states: “The returning officer always carries out a full and comprehensive debrief with the election staff after every election as part of normal process. This follows established practice in de-brief processes.

“The returning officer has already started the debrief process in July for the UK Parliamentary General Election and that all candidates and agents have been invited to provide their feedback.

“The returning officer is content to share the conclusions of the debrief with elected members and other stakeholders once completed.”
