As the spooky season descends, folks are stocking up on Halloween treats, including sweets, chocolates, and now, thanks to Fanta’s latest concoction, even fizzy drinks.
Fanta has stirred up a Beetlejuice-inspired beverage, drawing on the classic 1988 movie for its flavour profile. The release coincides with the buzz around Beetlejuice’s return in a 2024 sequel, which has been met with enthusiasm from fans who feel the follow-up was long overdue and “needed”.
However, opinions are split over Fanta’s new ghoulishly-themed drink. Dubbed Fanta Afterlife Zero Sugar, this apple-flavoured soda has been described by Fanta Brand Manager at The Coca-Cola Company, Hanna Lauri, as “unmissable”. Yet, taste testers on Reddit have shared mixed reviews about the beverage.
One disgruntled individual posted: “I tried this and thought it was absolutely awful”, with another concurring, “You’re 100% right. One of the worst sodas I ever tried. And I bought two because I usually love apple flavour drinks.”
Another added their voice, saying: “It tasted like how an apple-scented candle smells. Waxy, medicine-ee, and just plain bad lol”. But there were those who had a different take, expressing their fondness for the unique Fanta variant: “I like it. It reminds me of big red, but with a slight spice flavour”.
Someone remarked, “Was having a conversation about Fanta the other day with a buddy and I ended up looking up the Fanta brand and read about this new flavour”, adding, “It sounded rly interesting, but questionable. Really wanted to try it”.
An individual commented: “To me at least it tasted like a Christmas beverage; the flavour is supposed to be spiced apple.” Meanwhile, a user criticised it for having a “terrible aftertaste”, while another described the aftertaste as “indescribable”.
