Cillian Murphy is set to return as Tommy Shelby, with Netflix releasing some initial images from the forthcoming Peaky Blinders film on Monday. The streaming behemoth, in collaboration with the BBC for this new project, has also announced that production has officially commenced.

Creator Steven Knight and Murphy have teamed up again, with recent photos revealing them together and presenting the actor as an aged version of his character. The original Peaky Blinders series, which aired for six seasons on the BBC from 2013 to 2022, chronicles the adventures of a notorious Birmingham crime syndicate in the immediate aftermath of World War I.

With its roots tangled in true gritty tales, the drama takes a leaf from the criminal antics of an actual gang that ruled the roost in Birmingham from the gritty 1880s through to the roaring ’20s.

Fast-forward to the movie, helmed by series’ fixture Tom Harper, and we’re thrust into the throes of World War II’s chaos, reports the Express.

The film’s cast includes Murphy, as well as Dune’s stellar Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan fresh from Saltburn, and the legendary Tim Roth of Pulp Fiction fame. While the precise parts they’ll play are shrouded in mystery, Knight has dropped juicy hints that there’re more titan-sized names gearing to join the fray.

Whetting appetites for the much-awaited cinematic outing, Knight shared: “I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders.”

Director Harper couldn’t hide his excitement, remarking: “There’s a great feeling of anticipation and excitement amongst our outstanding cast and crew.

“We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary.”
