Move over Liz Truss – there’s a new star at the Conservative Party conference, and his name is Peter Andre.

The Mysterious Girl chart-topper and one-time jungle dweller is descending on Birmingham to enrapture MPs, party members and journalists alike at an official TikTok gig tonight.

And he’s received support from the most unlikely of places, with a slightly uncertain good-luck message from Penny Mordaunt.

At the end of an interview with Metro.co.uk, the former Leader of the House of Commons revealed she was not going to make it to the concert, citing the vague excuse that she was ‘going to be doing something else’.

She was also unable to name the singer’s biggest hit, admitting: ‘I know a number of his tunes, but I’ve no idea what he’s got his discs for.

‘But good luck to the fella and I hope everyone has a nice time.’

Mordaunt – who briefly served as the UK’s first female defence secretary – was one of the most high-profile Tory losses at the July 5 General Election, alongside Grant Shapps and Liz Truss.

She was once regularly talked about as a future party leader, having come third in the race that was ultimately won by Liz Truss in summer 2022.

In May the following year, she grabbed attention for wielding a four-foot, 8lb ceremonial sword at King Charles’s coronation, sending her popularity soaring.

Asked what she was looking for in the candidates currently running for leader, the one-time Splash contestant said: ‘What’s most important now is character, and reach and rapport with the British public.

‘We have to show them that we are back in the service of them and that they are our only care. And so, when people have been asking my advice about who to vote for, I say to them, you should vote for the person who makes you proudest.

‘Because that’s what we need to demonstrate to the public, to win back their approval and trust, and hopefully some pride in what we are doing.’

While she has decided not to endorse anyone in the race, she said she was ‘proud of all of them’.
