It was celebration time for Renfrew Burgh Band as the organisation stormed to success in a prestigious competition.

The band – which has entertained audiences across Renfrewshire and beyond for more than a century – retained the trophy for Best Second Section Band at the recent West of Scotland Entertainment Contest in Troon, South Ayrshire.

Conducted by musical director Mark Good, Renfrew Burgh Band impressed adjudicator Sheona White with its programme which opened with the Bangles’ upbeat Walk Like an Egyptian.

Principal cornetist Ash Paton took centre stage in the polka Miss Blue Bonnet before the programme took a reflective turn in the form of hymn, Lord of All Hopefulness.

The band concluded its programme with an original piece of music composed for the band by Gareth Bowman, entitled Air and Journey.

Reflecting on the day, Mr Good commented: “Following a short summer break, it was great to get back on stage with a clean, consistent performance, and I’m delighted for band members that they were able to pick up some silverware in the process.

“Renfrew Burgh Band enjoys a proud contesting history, and the band will be looking to build on this in the coming months, while also entertaining people across Renfrewshire and further afield.”

The contest success in Troon came during a busy spell for Renfrew, as it returned to the stage in Kelvingrove Bandstand in Glasgow, as part of a performance at Glasgow Doors Open Day Festival.

Upcoming engagements include further band competitions, as well as its annual performance at the Renfrew Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, a pensioners’ lunch in the McMaster Centre, and a string of Christmas concerts and carol playing opportunities.

Myra Mack, chairperson of Renfrew Burgh Band, said: “Getting on stage is what it’s all about, and we’re proud to represent Renfrewshire wherever we go.

“We’re grateful to everyone for their continued support, and look forward to a busy few weeks and months ahead, all the way through to Christmas.”
