Hamilton Accies defender Cian Newbury’s season is over after it was revealed he will require surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

And the club have been dealt a further blow after midfielder Kyle MacDonald broke his metatarsal and will be sidelined for at least three months.

Accies boss John Rankin admits it is a huge blow for the club to lose their talented 19-year-old centre-back and 24-year-old MacDonald, who recently returned for fracturing his skull last season.

Rankin told Lanarkshire Live Sport : “Cian Newbury looks like he has done his ACL so that is a big blow. He got injured last week in a reserve game and that doesn’t look too promising.

“He is probably going to need an operation, which isn’t ideal. He played a few times in the Championship this season and the kid has got a lot of promise.

“We saw that in games and he started in the cup [SPFL Trust Trophy win over Dundee United B], so he is obviously really disappointed. He needs to overcome that disappointment now and treat his rehab in the best way.

“That’s Cian’s season over now. He’ll be out for 6-9 months so we need to support him through some tough times now.”

On MacDonald, Rankin added: “Kyle is in a moonboot and will be out for the best part of three months. He was running and just felt some extra pressure on his foot, some sharp pain, and he’s broken his downside metatarsal. We had this last season with Andy Winter as well.

“It’s not great, Macca was hitting a bit of form, playing in different positions for us, so it is tough to lose two players at the same time.”

Accies travel to Queen’s Park on Saturday without the duo, as they aim to build on Saturday’s win over Partick Thistle.
