Perthshire-based Binn Group has announced it has secured a five-year waste management contract with NHS Tayside.

Taking effect from today (October 1), the annual contract covers the health board’s 47 sites across the region including Perth Royal Infirmary.

Under the agreement, Binn Group will manage NHS Tayside’s residual, electrical and green waste as well as glass and a broad range of recycled materials including dry mixed recycling, metals and bulky goods at its Glenfarg base.

Binn Group told the PA this week that they were not able to disclose the value of the contract won from waste management company Biffa, but described it as very significant. The PA also contacted NHS Tayside for the figure.

Binn Group managing director Brian Harkins said: “We’re delighted to announce this new waste management contract with our local health care provider, NHS Tayside.

“This significant contract covers major hospitals and a number of local healthcare centres across Tayside.
“As a company committed to sustainable waste management practices, we will work closely with NHS Tayside to manage their current waste disposal requirements and, importantly, help them maximise recycling efficiency and reduce overall waste levels across their operations.”

It follows Binn Group’s recent multi-million pound investment in innovative waste sorting technology.

The new Binn-NHS Tayside partnership is focused on delivering cost efficiencies by driving down the volume of the health board’s residual waste.
Binn Group will also work closely with NHS Tayside to help the organisation further reduce waste levels across its sites.

NHS Tayside provides health care services for the residents in the geographical local government areas of Angus, Dundee and Perth and Kinross, serving a population of around 420,000.

Established in 2001, Binn Group has grown to become one of Scotland’s leading independent providers of integrated recycling and waste management services. The company has also been at the forefront of adopting and promoting more sustainable practices across its waste management operations.
