PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Residents in Giles and Tazewell counties impacted by Hurricane Helene are now eligible to apply for assistance from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Administration).
Eligibility was made possible after Pres. Joe Biden declared many counties in Southwest Viriginia major disaster areas.
Residents can now apply for financial assistance in paying for home repairs, temporary housing and many supplies and necessities damaged or destroyed by the storm.
Here is a summary of what may be eligible expenses:
- Essential items such as water, food, first aid, prescriptions, infant formula, breastfeeding supplies, diapers, medical supplies and equipment, personal hygiene items and fuel for transportation.
- Rental assistance if you are displaced because of the disaster including financial assistance for the following: hotel stays, stays with family and friends, or other options while you look for a rental unit.
- Repair or replacement of a vehicle, appliances, room furnishings, personal or family computer.
- Books, uniforms, tools, computers and other items required for school or work, including self-employment.
- Moving and storage fees, medical expenses, childcare and funeral expenses
Residents can apply online at disasterassistance.gov and download the FEMA App. They can also call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362.
In-person assistance will soon be available as teams will walk door-to-door in impacted areas.
FEMA does not pay for losses covered by insurance.
Other counties are on the list include Wythe, Grayson, Washington and Smyth as well as the City of Galax.
