BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -A band of brothers event is returning for its third year in honor of a local hero.

The American Brother Foundation was established in 2019, by the sister of Marine Corp sergeant Mecot Camara, who was killed in the Beirut bombing of 1983.

His sister, Elisa Camara, created the foundation to carry on the memory of her late brother and spread the joy he had in life.

This is the third year the foundation has held a ruck which is also known as a hike to bring people together and always remember those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Camara’s sister says she doesn’t want anyone to be forgotten.

“It’s a memorial ruck. So, everybody wears a rock bib, and you can write the name of somebody special for you. We also have the names of the Beirut fallen, if you would like to take one of their names and they’re carried with you throughout the hike,” said Camara.

A fellow marine says he would never miss this event.

“To me, it’s very important. I traveled 11 hours, me and my dog sarge and I wouldn’t miss it. This is like my own sister. You know what I mean? That’s the Marine Corps. We’re a band of brothers and we stick together. No matter what. Once a Marine, always a Marine,” said Pasquale Burgese, Beirut Marine.

The foundation works to provide resources for veterans, scholarships for military kids and much more. Those interested can register here for three day event starting Friday, October 3.
