A driver has died after a car left a Scots road and caught fire.

Officers from Police Scotland were called to the B851 road near Inverness at around 11.20am on Wednesday, October 2 after reports of a vehicle on fire.

The car left the road and fell down a nearby ditch. Scottish Fire and Rescue sent three appliances to the scene as smoke was spotted billowing out from the roadside.

Cops confirmed the driver of the vehicle died after the car “left the carriageway” near Daviot village south of Inverness. The road was closed for around 30 hours.

A picture taken from the scene shows forensic officers in white suits scouring the roadside, with the burnt out car spotted lying in an embankment.

Police Scotland has also confirmed it has referred itself to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner. The watchdog carries out an independent probe into “incidents involving the police”.

Police confirmed officers were not pursing the vehicle prior to the incident on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We are investigating the death of the driver of a vehicle which left the carriageway of the B851 near Inverness shortly after 11.20 am on Wednesday, 2 October, 2024. Enquiries remain ongoing. The circumstances have been referred to The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.”
