Ex Rangers star Vladimir Weiss has stunned his club by immediately retiring from football after their latest Champions League defeat to Manchester City at the age of 34.

The Slovan Bratislava captain and son of the manager of the club played as Celtic romped to a 5-1 victory on the first game of the tournament. And he also featured against his former club City for an hour as the English champions eased to a 4-0 win in Slovakia this week.

But he has reportedly told the club and teammates that he has decided to bow out from football altogether after the game. His father said: “Vladimir will make his own announcement in the next few days. But yes, I believe that was his last game. I’m his father and manager and it’s hard for me. Everything begins and ends at some point. It will also happen to me too.”

It’s not the first time Weiss has dramatically ended a section of his career. He quit international football initially in 2018 after being outraged at being an unused sub. When the final sub went on in a game against Czech Republic, he stormed back to the dressing room and walked out.

He later returned to international football in 2022 and won 77 caps. Weiss played for a season on loan at Rangers from City and helped them win the title in 2011 when he made 17 starts in the league and scored five goals.
