More than £11,000 has been raised in a desperate bid to fly a seriously ill Cowie man back home from a hospital in Turkey.

In Wednesday’s Observer, we told how Bob Carrick – described as “one of life’s good guys” – fell unwell while abroad on Saturday, September 21. He was then operated on in a Turkish hospital but went on to suffer further complications.

His worried family have already been forced to fork out a whopping £26,000 as they wrangle with insurers.

Desperate to bring him home, their only option is to fund a private medical flight for the 50-year-old – at an eye-watering cost of £45,000.

Bob’s sister-in-law, Christine Young, launched an online fundraiser to raise the sum that would allow Bob to return back to Scotland to continue his treatment.

Now, £11,000 has been raised towards the cause.

In an update on the donations page on Wednesday, Christine, posting when the page approached £8,500 in pledges, said: “We want to extend our deepest thanks to everyone who has donated so far to help us bring Bob home safely.

“Thanks to your generosity, we’ve raised £8,376 towards our initial goal of £10,000, but we’re now aiming for £45,000 to cover the costs of the medical flight. We still have a long way to go, and we kindly ask that you share this fundraiser with your own networks to help us reach more people who may want to contribute. Every donation and share gets us one step closer to getting Bob the care he needs. Thank you again for all your support during this challenging time.”

On the page, Christine said: “This is the last thing we as a family wanted to do.

“Many people know Bob is a proud man and would never ask but we need your help. They to date have paid over £26,000 for hospital fees whilst the insurance drags their heels and have no more money to spare. Our only option now is to get our own medical-assisted flight home which has been quoted at just over £45,000. I know it’s a lot to ask, and I wouldn’t if it wasn’t our only choice. If you can’t donate please feel free to offer advice or share.”
