Trench coats are a wardrobe staple that won’t just have you looking classy during autumn, but pretty much all year round.
Burberry might be one brand that comes to many minds, but it looks like fashion fans have found “the next best thing”. It’s M&S’ Cotton Rich Belted Longline Trench Coat – and it will save you over £1,890 overall.
Hailed for its “IT girl vibes”, the high street trench features a similar design to Burberry’s iconic Chelsea Long Organic Cotton-Garbadine Trench, currently £1,890 from net-a-porter. It can be bought in two autumnal shades – buff and black.
Despite the cheaper price-tag, M&S’ “sophisticated” design boasts the same timeless double breasted front and traditional shoulder epaulettes. With full lining and the firm’s Stormwear technology, it has a “showerproof” layer shoppers are wearing in “all seasons”.
Its smart design is complete with handy side pockets, buttoned cuff straps and a detachable belt you can use to “cinch” your shape. Currently described as “selling fast”, the £79 trench coat is still available to buy in sizes 6 to 24.
A true wardrobe classic, you can wear it with pretty much anything, such as a pair of wide leg jeans, ankle boots and chic jumper for a smart outfit. It can also be paired with your favourite dress and heels for any fancy evening events you have planned.
A top seller for M&S, the popular Cotton Rich Belted Longline Trench Coat has been a major hit with fashion enthusiasts who say it is “this season’s must have” and “the next best thing” to the iconic Burberry coat.
One glowing review read: “Love this trench, dress it up with a suit or casual with jeans, I wear mine with Adidas trackie bottoms and Sambas for that it girl vibe. A versatile coat that will see you through many seasons.”

A second praised: “Great quality, well made. Obviously not a Burberry trench but to be honest the next best thing. Just right for this season’s must have. A great price too.”
Someone else added: “Love it. I’ve worn my new trench coat several times now, in all weathers. Its long enough to keep me properly dry whilst not being so long it makes getting in the car awkward. Its such a well designed and well made garment I am delighted at the sensible price. I’m sure these will fly off the racks.”
Another gushed: “Great trench coat in excellent substantial fabric and beautifully cut. Buttons and trims of good quality. A true classic. Good length. I normally wear a size 12 dress and am 5ft.9ins. I always buy M&S coat a size larger to accommodate autumn sweaters.
“Looking forward to wearing this coat all seasons M&S.”
However, one shopper who wasn’t overly fond of the design wrote: “This style can so depend on your size and shape to determine if flattering. Way way too long on me. Im 5 ft 3. All in all a dreary looking coat. I did not buy.”

Meanwhile, New Look’s £59.99 Stone Belted Longline Trench Coat also boasts a very Burberry-esque design for less. For a celeb-approved design, then Frankie Bridge recently raved over H&M’s Maxi Trench Coat (£54.99) in her regular “Frankie’s Faves” Instagram series.
