Threave Rovers have been handed the perfect draw in the second round of the Scottish Cup.

Their reward for hammering Vale of Leithen on Saturday is a home tie against struggling Stranraer later this month.

And Meadow Park gaffer, Danny Dunglinson, said: “In terms of a big draw, we couldn’t have asked much more.

“We’re confident we can give them a draw and there’s always the possibility you can cause a shock. It’s a local derby and in terms of getting fans through the door it’s the best draw we could have hoped for.

“It would be good to get it on TV. When you look at the other draws, our one is the real standout – they’re struggling in League Two, it’s a local derby and it’s also an opportunity to get a bit of awareness for Charlie Watson’s fundraising.

“Queens are playing Annan that weekend, which is a bit of a blow as we’ll maybe lose a few fans to that – but if ours is Friday night you might get Queens and Annan boys coming. It would be good to have two local derbies on TV over the weekend.”

Saturday’s game was goalless until just before half time before Ross Irving put Threave into a lead that was quickly doubled by Harry Officer.

Officer scored again in spectacular style just after the interval before the visitors got one back through Kyle Mitchell.

But there was no stopping Threave, Aiden Kerr restoring the three goal lead before Liam Park scored with a quarter of an hour left, Charlie Watson – who is subject of a fundraising campaign to help his battle with cancer scoring in the final minute to complete a 6-1 win.

Dunglinson said: “All that mattered was getting through but the fact we won comfortably and played well was a bonus.

“Once we got the first goal it seemed to relax everyone, there was a wee bit of tension as the Scottish Cup means a bit more so that first goal relaxed us a bit more.

“We responded quite quickly when they scored – two goals is a strange lead as if they score they’re right back in it.

“We scored at a good time and any momentum they were going to get was taken away.”

They’re due to host Nithsdale Wanderers in the Haig Gordon Cup and also play at Wishaw in the West of Scotland League third division.

Dunglinson explained: “Last year, we were in the South cups and the South of Scotland refused to change the fixtures, which is absolute madness because they’ve changed fixtures for teams in the league to the Wednesday night. We asked them to put it midweek and they said no.

“The under-20s are going to play it this year, which for them is good, but I’d still like to have been involved.

“We’re in the South Challenge Cup but again we’ll have to play the under-20s as the South has refused to move fixtures to accommodate Threave.

“They’ve move fixtures to accomoadte Gretna and Caley Braves, I don’t know if there’s a been a fall out because Threave moved to the west.

“The under-20s will take control of them and it gives us an opportunity to see ones that are maybe ready to step up.

“We’ve got the Wishaw game this weekend and Thorn Athletic don’t have a league game until October 26. It’s a chance for us to make up games on them – we’ve Wishaw and Berwick and a league game on the 19th.

“If we can pick up wins in them before the Scottish it puts us in a good position in the league, we’re not falling too many games behind, but it’s one game at a time.”
