As the weather closes in, we’re much less likely to be heading to the pub for evening drinks. Instead, it’s the time of year when having a really good drink at home seems like the best option – so you don’t have to brave the cold and dark weather to still have a good night.

And if you fancied something a bit stronger than a pumpkin spice latte, Aldi has a brilliant range of boozy buys on offer. Few things feel more appropriate than whisky during this time of year – it can help warm you up while you’re snuggled up indoors.

Not only does Aldi have a whole range of whiskies for different tastes, but lots of them are also award-winning, so you know they’re a safe bet. Just take the Glen Marnoch Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which Aldi offers for £17.99. This tipple was awarded a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge 2023 – marking its second year in a row – and you can see why whisky fans love it, with its notes of dried fruit and oak, and slightly sweet finish.

For something even more affordable, you could opt for the Highland Black Distiller’s Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky, which costs £14.99. It won gold in the blended – standard category of the Scotch Whisky Masters 2024, and has notes of ripe berries, oak and vanilla.

If bourbon is more your speed, Aldi also has Samuel Joe’s Straight Kentucky Bourbon – which won gold at the International Spirits Challenge 2024. It costs £14.49 and is perfect poured over ice with cola.

They’re brilliant deals, but it’s worth noting that how much you enjoy a type of whisky is down to your own personal taste. Take the Glen Marnoch Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky – plenty of people love this tipple. A review on Wine Uncorked deemed it “well worth trying”, while a write-up on The Benson Revue read: “It’s a lovely whisky – very smooth in texture, sweet in taste, quite light in colour and appearance, but very warming at this time of year.”

Another review on Ascot on Scotch read: “The nose and the arrival are really pleasant and the fullness of the flavour is more satisfying than you might expect from such a young and affordable dram.” However other reviewers had some notes to share, like this one from Whisky Unplugged: “There’s a sweetness – dare I say caramel – in here that is not unpleasant but does feel rather injected,” while a write-up on the Life of Andra blog said: “For me, it lacks any depth.”

If you did want to shop around, Amazon has a brilliant deal on the Laphroaig Oak Select single malt Scotch, bringing its price down from £36 to £24.94. Alternatively, Loch Lomond’s 18-Year-Old single malt won Whisky of the Year 2024, and is available for £79.95 (down from £89.95) at the Whisky Exchange.
