Loch Ken played host to the Scottish K1 Marathon Championships on Saturday.

The event, open to all canoers and kayakers, was hosted by Kirkcudbright Canoe Club, with competitors coming from across the country to take part.

There were 6km and 13km events for adults and a 4km one for youngsters – with kayakers having to exit and re-enter the water between each lap.

Kirkcudbright Canoe Club’s John Blaikie said: “It went really well and we had more people than we thought we would get.

“The weather was relatively good to us, there were no strong winds so the water was relatively calm.

“There was a good turnout and there were youngsters down from Glasgow to take part.

“As far as the club’s concerned we’d probably like to do it again – whether it’s the championships or just an open race.”
