If that crime is a felony, the consequences can last a lifetime.

While laws vary by state felons in the U.S. typically lose the right to vote and they often face barriers to employment, housing and loans.

People convicted of felonies can even travel to some countries like Canada or Japan.

A great-grandmother was branded a felon for decades, and she says it ruined her life because it turns out she never was one.
