A murderer is behind bars tonight and facing a life sentence after being convicted over the death of a young man during a disturbance in a flat.

Caleb Ferguson killed Cameron Rae at a property in Perth last year and was found guilty over the killing today at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The 20-year-old was 19 when he was arrested over the killing, which took place at a flat on South Methven Street, Perth, at around 9.40pm on April 8, 2023.

The victim, also 20, was pronounced dead a short time later and a police probe was launched, and Ferguson was arrested during the investigation.

Speaking after the conviction, Detective Inspector Scott Carswell said: “Cameron was a young man when his life was ended by the violent actions of Caleb Ferguson, who will now face the consequences of his deplorable actions.

“This incident was felt by the whole community in Perth, and our thoughts remain with Cameron’s family all those that knew him. Violence has a significant and long-lasting impact on the local area and it will not be tolerated in any form.

“We are committed to making our communities safer and take a zero-tolerance approach to offensive weapon and knife crime. I’d urge anyone who has information in relation to offensive weapons or knife crime to contact us. Information from the public is vital in helping us crackdown on violent crime.”

In February this year, almost a year on from the killing, investigations into the death continued. Police officers in wetsuits were spotted in the Lade – a river in the city. A Police Scotland spokesperson said at the time: “This activity relates to ongoing enquiries following the death of Cameron Rae on Saturday, April 8, 2023.”

Following his death, Kerry Burgess, mum of Cameron, paid tribute online. She wrote: “Fly high my boy. We were so proud of you son. I will always love you. My wee cheeky Cammy, you were just a big lump of fun always wanting a carry on.”

There was also a round of applause for Rangers-daft Cameron in the 20th minute during the Scottish Cup semi-final between Celtic and Rangers at Hampden.
