A shooting at a Ramada hotel in Fairfield, N.J. left one person dead and another wounded, officials confirmed Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m., according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
At 1 p.m., the Fairfield Police Department issued a statement notifying the public of “heavy police activity in the east end of town near the Jose Tejas, Ramada Inn area.”
Roughly an hour later, cops said there was no active shooter in the area, but did not offer additional details at the time.
At 4:15 p.m., officials confirmed a shooting had occurred at the Ramada by Wyndham hotel on Two Bridges Road.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, while the other “was currently at a local hospital” undergoing surgery.
Neither the victims’ identities nor the condition of the wounded individual were immediately released.
Authorities said that it appears that both victims were employees of the hotel, ABC NY reported. It’s unclear if they had any relationship to the shooter.
Guests had not been allowed back into their rooms as of 6 p.m.
Fairfield Police said it will share information about the suspected gunman “once it becomes available.”
“Again, there is no threat to the community,” officials said.
Fairfield is located roughly 20 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan.
