PRINCETON, W.Va. – Veterans were honored during a fundraising event at the Those Who Served War Museum in Princeton Thursday evening.

All proceeds from event go to the Community Foundation of the Virginias and will help provide scholarships for area students and grants for area non-profit organizations.

At the event, visitors toured the museum, which was founded by former State Sen. Tony Whitlow who is also the museum’s director.

Whitlow was on hand to answer questions about the museum and James H. “Smokey” Shott, executive director of the Foundation, also attended.

The program included a flag folding ceremony by the Mercer County Honor Guard and live music by Dan Turner and Becky Allen.

Whitlow encourages anyone who has not toured the museum, which is located in the former Memorial Building across from the Mercer County Courthouse, to do so to experience a comprehensive history of wars residents have fought, and died, in as well as thousands of pieces of memorabilia.

The Community Foundation of the Virginias set a record in 2023, awarding more than $1 million in grants to area organizations and scholarships for students.

It is the highest amount of donations in the foundation’s 30-year history.
