Despite picking the ball out of his net seven times in midweek, Kasper Schmeichel is being backed to take Celtic to “the next level” in Europe.

Borussia Dortmund ensured it was a miserable night for Schmeichel and his teammates at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday, racking up the goals in a 7-1 demolition. However, it might have been a lot worse but for Schmeichel, who made several smart second half stops to at least prevent double figures and more embarrassment for Brendan Rodgers’ side. And former Man Utd coach Rene Meulensteen reckons the Dane will be key to the Hops progressing to the last 16.

The Premiership champions have six matches still to play in the league phase, starting away at Atalanta next week. Meulensteen is taking it for granted that Schmeichel will get his hands on the league title and the Scottish Cup this season, and believes he is the foundation that the Bhoys will build their run to the Champions League knockouts on.

“Kasper Schmeichel will of course help Celtic win the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup, but he is an outstanding goalkeeper and can also take them to the next level in Europe,” Meulensteen told Boyle Sports.

“He has a great personality and has so much experience, the key will be to make a difference for Celtic in Europe where they have struggled. I think with Schmeichel, they can do exceptionally well in the Champions League and reach the knockout stages.”
