One person is dead, and a suspect has been charged with first-degree murder.

AUSTIN, Texas — Lanes of the North Interstate 35 northbound service road were closed near the Capital Plaza shopping center Friday morning as police investigated a deadly stabbing.

The Austin Police Department (APD) said at approximately 10:18 a.m., officers responded to reports of a stabbing in the 6000 block of the North I-35 northbound service road, just south of the U.S. 290 split. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a man suffering from stab wounds.

APD and the Austin Fire Department attempted life-saving measures on the man before Austin-Travis County EMS medics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:48 a.m.

APD said a suspect, identified as 31-year-old Todd Wimberly, was detained and taken into custody, and that the incident appears to be isolated. After hearing from witnesses, police later found Wimberly walking on the northbound frontage road covered in blood and still holding a bloody knife. He became combative with police before being placed under arrest.

According to the investigation, Wimberly stabbed the victim in the roadway and walked away. He is in the Travis County Jail and has been charged with first-degree murder.

It is unclear if there was any prior relationship between Wimberly and the victim.

The incident is being investigated as Austin’s 50th homicide of 2024.
