A taxi driver and three women are in hospital following a horror crash which saw a black cab plough into pedestrians outside Glasgow Central.

Police have launched an appeal following the serious collision that took place on Union Street at its junction with Gordon Street around 1.50pm today.

The major incident sparked a huge emergency response with dozens of police cars, ambulance and even firefighters scrambled to the scene.

Officers have now confirmed that the 62-year-old male driver of the taxi and and two women aged 60 and 61 were rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital by ambulance. Paramedics also whisked a 61-year-old old woman to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Another woman, aged 50, was assessed by paramedics at the scene and later left.

Police locked down Union Street and Gordon Street as they launched an investigation into the crash. Those roads have since reopened.

Shocked eyewitnesses told earlier how they were left stunned as the taxi mounted the pavement at a set of traffic lights.

The black cab was pictured fully on the pavement at the corner of the Tesco Express store on Gordon Street.

Other images from the scene showed emergency crews place barriers around the crash site, with blue Police Scotland fences erected.

One eyewitness earlier told the Record: “Just witnessed a taxi run two people over at Glasgow Central.”

Another person said: “I just walked by a major incident outside Glasgow Central Station. Huge emergency services response. It looks like a taxi mounted the pavement right outside the Tesco Express.”

A second eyewitness added: “The emergency services arrived on Union Street quickly and erected screens around the area and the black cab.”

Cops are appealing with anyone who may witnessed the horror crash to get in touch. They have also appealed to anyone who may have footage of the moment the crash took place.

Sergeant Christopher Hoggans from Road Policing said: “Our enquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what happened. I am appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time to contact us with any information they may have. I would also ask anyone with recording equipment to check the footage as it could assist us in our ongoing investigation.”
