BLUEFIELD, W. Va. -The recent storm has caused significant damage to the Appalachian region, with the subsequent power outage causing many people to lose much of their food supply as well. Among those affected are small businesses that rely on refrigerated or frozen food to continue to operate.

The Blue Spoon Café has been closed for more than a week after losing around ninety percent of their refrigerated and frozen inventory. To help pay bills, taxes, and payroll, they opened temporarily for their monthly brunch on Sunday.

However, they wanted to use their limited resources to help others as well. This became a charity brunch, with ten percent of the day’s sales going to buy things for those impacted by Hurricane Helene.

“I always love giving back. I always love being a part of the community, and in return, the community always supports when we hold special events, and I’m just glad that we can give back as a group,” says Nicole Coeburn, owner of the Blue Spoon Café.

After the brunch, The Blue Spoon Café returned to being closed until further notice, with Coeburn saying that it’s hard starting over again following the loss of inventory. However, she encourages people to go out and support other small businesses that are in the same boat.
