A Britpop star who beat Oasis to the top of the charts at the height of the genre has replied to the support act reveal.

Legendary guitarist Graham Coxon, current frontman of The Waeve and member of Blur, replied to Liam Gallagher’s series of tweets where he revealed who would be opening for Oasis in the UK and Ireland leg of their tour. The post from Gallagher, 52, revealed Richard Ashcroft of The Verve fame could join the famous brothers on their sold-out reunion tour.

But Coxon says Oasis should “get a decent band in” for the tour and had some suggestions of his own, including the band which bested Oasis and beat them to the top of the charts at the peak of their fame.

Gallagher had posted to Twitter/X with details of the lineup for shows in Edinburgh, London and Manchester, writing: “Richard Ashcroft or Manic Street Preachers as support.” He later revealed Ashcroft had been chosen in a separate post, reading: “Just spoke to the CHEF here it is OASIS RICHARD ASHCROFT CAST you are welcome see you next year I’m off to to identify as a massive c*** LG x.”

Blur guitarist Coxon replied to the initial tweet asking fans to choose between Welsh band Manic Street Preachers and Ashcroft, writing: “Really? Get a decent band in – Supergrass? Blur? Hhahah. [SIC].”

Supergrass recently announced a 30-year anniversary tour of their hit debut, I Should Coco, while Blur headlined Wembley for two sold-out shows last summer.

Fans are already excited for the Oasis reunion but a Blur and Oasis tour partnership seemed out of the ordinary, though some are hopeful. One user wrote: “the people want a Oasis & Blur tour! Would be a dream.”

Another replied with a quote tweet from Liam Gallagher, who had previously suggested an “old dears” tour between the two bands should be planned. “I love Blur and at some point we have to do n old dears tours [SIC],” he wrote.

Those who loved the music of both bands seemed keen on the idea of having the groups share a headliner slot. One user suggested: “Why not an Oasis Blur double headline tour? Headliner switches each night.” Another added: “Make it happen Graham.”

Blur and Oasis’ chart battle came to a head in 1995 when the Damon Albarn-led outfit topped the charts with Country House, beating Oasis’ classic Roll With It by 58,000 sales. Blur, which also featured Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree, sold 274,000 copies of Country House on release while the Gallagher brothers shifted 216,000 of Roll With It.
