The Red Army are on the march after making it 13 wins on the bounce under Jimmy Thelin.
Pittodrie punters are chanting about the crack at Celtic after the international break and Hotline callers are starting to believe an Aberdeen title charge could be on after all. Laurie McCall, Carntyne, said: “For the first time in many years Aberdeen look as if they will be legitimate title challengers to my team Celtic and Rangers also. At last hopefully the top flight of Scottish football will have a more competitive look to it as our top league has been berated and ridiculed for too long by our English neighbours.”
But Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: “How refreshing it was for Aberdeen fans chanting “bring on Celtic” we’re going to win the league and with Jimmy Thelin. saying they won’t change their style of play against Celtic? Word of warning though Jimmy, remember Brendan Rodgers said something similar when we went up against another Champions League team recently and the rest is history.”
Celtic and Rangers both won at the weekend but supporters of both had some grumbles. Gerard Milligan, Renfrewshire, said: “I think everybody was too heavy in early praise of Arne Engels. He’s a bit cocky and for an attacking midfielder three goals in over 50 games for Augsburg is not impressive. He looks no better than David Turnbull, and at 21 it’s still only potential we’re looking at.”
But Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: “It was far from a good performance from Celtic but they did what champions do and got the three points. It was always going to be a tough game after the midweek thrashing in Dortmund.”
Meanwhile Alan Milligan emailed: “Rangers proved yet again they are badly in need of a couple of decent strikers. Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane are not up to the task and this again falls on Clemente’s poor management and recruitment.”
There were some controversial calls at the weekend as usual and Paul McArdle, Gourock, said: “The ref never saw the incident where the County player went down like a sniper hit pretending he got headbutted by Nicolas Kuhn off the ball. VAR does not decide who gets yellow cards so neither player should have been booked. Celtic need to call this out.”
And Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, said: “No matter how bad the challenge by Ianis Hagi was for his red card, how on earth was Benji Kimpioka allowed on the park with no shin guards? Laws are laws and officials allowing players to break these rules.”
Hearts are still without a domestic win and Neil Hunter, Penicuik, said: “I hope Neil Lennon is one of the candidates being considered for the new managerial position at Hearts. I will be picking and choosing what games to attend from here on in. Even considering my £1.50 a month donation to the Foundation of Hearts.”
Across the city it’s also a struggle and Neil Renton, Leith, said: “David Gray might be a Hibs legend but the credit he has with fans will soon start to run out unless they start winning games. You’d expect a team with the Easter Road budget to beat Motherwell. If he’s not careful Gray will be given two seasons to improve – autumn and winter.”
Down in Ayrshire, Jim McClean Rothesay, said: “Maybe now Derek McInnes will play his best team and not just play his favourite players. Kyle Vassell and Danny Armstrong should have been dropped weeks ago they have contributed nothing at all to the team. I hope Derek will take on board about the timing of his substitutes as well after a great result on Saturday.”
