ROCHESTER, Pa. (Gray News) – A high school football player in Pennsylvania was seriously injured after he took a hard helmet hit during a game on Friday.
According to a GoFundMe page, Rochester High School football player Carter Mason was playing in the game against Shenango High School when the injury happened.
Family members said Carter took a “severe helmet hit on the field” then walked to the sideline where he collapsed and fell unconscious.
His family said he was rushed to the hospital where doctors determined he had a brain bleed.
According to an update on GoFundMe, Carter is on the road to recovery and is now breathing on his own.
“The doctors have also stopped the sedation and he is briefly opening his eyes,” the page reads.
The family said there are “a lot of positive indications that this will be a long recovery from a very serious concussion, as long as other complications can be avoided and he continues to show strong improvement.”
In a statement, the Rochester Area School District also confirmed Carter’s injury and asked for prayers.
“Our entire school community is praying for the young man who was injured during Friday night’s game. The Rochester Area School District, including families, students and staff send their thoughts and prayers to the student, his family, our coaches and team, along with the Rochester school community,” the school district said.
