NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV/Gray New) – Vanderbilt fans and students celebrated a historic win over No. 1 ranked Alabama by tearing down the stadium goalpost and tossing it into the river.
Following the Commodores’ win, students paraded the goalpost from FirstBank Stadium to the Cumberland River where they tossed it into the water.
WSMV followed the journey of the goalpost from the stadium to the river:
First, the unranked ‘Dores defeated No. 1 Alabama 40-35 for the program’s first win against the Tide since 1984.
After the win, students stormed the field in celebration and began working to pull the goalpost down, eventually succeeding in their goal.
They then took to the streets, carrying the goalpost out of the stadium and onto Broadway.
After parading the goalpost down Broadway, the students then tossed it into the Cumberland River.
WSMV saw law enforcement at the river, trying to plan their next steps.
WSMV shared video of emergency crews eventually pulling the goalpost from the river.
