A TikTok user has shared a nifty trick to combat the dreaded season, which sees an influx of these eight-legged intruders from September to mid-October.

The user, known as @plantbasedkate, suggests a simple method that might just be a lifesaver for those with arachnophobia.

As the chill sets in, not only small spiders but also their larger counterparts are on the lookout for cosy corners in our homes, Kate explains. However, the conversation took a turn when another user chimed in, arguing that it’s not the job of those with a fear of spiders to accommodate them, and they should find shelter elsewhere.

Yet, some highlighted that the proposed solution, involving VapoRub, could be harmful to pets. One concerned pet owner commented: “Unfortunately it’s toxic to cats so I can’t use it.”

This same individual offered their own spider deterrent advice, avoiding mint or cleaning products due to the risk to their cat, suggesting instead: “I recommend just closing holes and use an insect screen door/window.” Another added that VapoRub is also unsafe for dogs.

This comes as news surfaces of biting giant spiders poised to invade UK homes soon. These can be recognised by their brownish-reddish bodies adorned with white markings.

Typically, spiders begin to emerge in early September, with their indoor presence peaking until around mid-October, after which they become less visible within homes.

Female spiders are known to stay in one place for all of their lives, but males are always on the move. During spider mating season, the males will go searching for females and often find them inside homes, which is why you may notice more of them over the next couple of months.
