A community champion of Cambuslang was honoured in front of HRH The King and Queen to mark 25 years of the Scottish Parliament.

St Bride’s Church parish priest Father Paul Morton was hailed a local hero at the special celebration event in Holyrood in recognition of his vital work in the community and beyond.

This year sees the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament, which was marked by the royal affair on September 28.

The event was attended by HRH The King and Queen, and included special performances which showcased Scottish music and culture.

Commenting on the honour, Fr Morton, said: “It was a great privilege to be at the Scottish Parliament for the 25th anniversary of its opening. I was conscious of representing many people in our area at that event.

“It was very good to meet so many Scottish people who are doing so much good.”

MSPs were asked to nominate ‘local heroes’ to attend the celebrations – constituents from their local area who have made an extraordinary contribution to their communities.

MSP for Rutherglen, Clare Haughey, recognised the work of Fr Morton.

Ms Haughey said: “In the past 25 years the Scottish Parliament has passed legislation which has improved the lives of the people of Scotland – from the smoking ban, free prescriptions and university tuition fees, equal marriage and vastly expanded early learning and childcare provision.

“It has undoubtedly made a huge difference to all of our lives.

“I was delighted to have the opportunity to recognise Fr Morton as a true ‘local hero’, who has himself touched the lives of so many local people.

“Fr Morton is at the heart of so much community work in Cambuslang and beyond, he’s a champion of social justice and equality, and truly works across all faiths and none.”
