A couple with limited annual leave have shared how they managed to visit three countries in a single day.

Balancing work and leisure can be challenging, and it’s crucial to find the right balance to avoid burnout. Maximising our precious holiday time is essential for recharging. Many opt for a break abroad, but booking a week or two can mean using a lot of your paid time off.

Travel enthusiasts Alex and James Lock, who create travel content online together, believe that even if you only have one day of annual leave left, it is still worth going on holiday. The couple, who split their time between the UK and Australia and are expecting their first child, once even impressively managed to explore three countries within 24 hours.

They enjoyed local cuisine, explored historicalsites, found the best views, and participated in a variety of activities. Alex and James visited France, Monaco, and Italy during the whistle-stop tour.

“When you have one day of annual leave left. Save this for your trip,” they advised on their Instagram page @twosometravellers. Their journey began in Menton, France, where they woke up early for a stroll through the beautiful city to the cathedral, grabbed a coffee and pastry at Jean Luc Pele, and explored the colourful streets and old town.

“You can walk down the famous steps before have a dip and a sunbathe,” they said. The pair added the beachfront at the base of the old town, known as Plage Des Sablettes, offers “incredible views in every direction.”

After their time on the sands, Alex and James took a 20-minute train to Monaco. Once there, the pair soaked up the stunning scenery before fulfilling their “James Bond fantasy” at the Monte Carlo Casino.

They noted that while entry to the attraction is free, “if you wish to gamble it’s €19 [£15.93] entry fee but you get €10 [£8.39] back as a voucher.”

The adventurers also spotted an array of luxury cars parked outside the casino. “For a low-key lunch check out Steak ‘n Shake with views of the harbour and smashed patty burgers. After lunch, take a stroll about the docks to appraise the superyachts. Casual £20million yachts!” they joked.

Next, they ambled up the stairway to the Prince’s Palace and revelled in the panoramic vistas over Monaco.

To cap off their day, Alex and James boarded the train again – this time making a 30-minute journey from Monaco to Ventimiglia. This northern Italian haven is acclaimed for its vibrant old quarter, heritage-rich sites, retail therapy opportunities, inviting coastlines, and the bustling weekly market.

Situated just 7km from the Franco-Italian boundary, it’s a gem worth uncovering. The couple enjoyed a dreamy stroll along the promenade, taking in the scenic old town views from across the river. They wrapped up their enchanting evening over at Ristorante II Gattopardo.

Sharing their culinary experience, they raved: “They have 43 wood fire pizza options, but you have to try the pasta dishes… It’s the best pasta you’ll ever have.”
